Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has unveiled a sweeping traffic reform plan for Lahore, announcing a complete ban on motorcycle rickshaws on five model roads as part of a broader strategy to ease congestion and enhance safety. The chief minister has given authorities a 30-day deadline for decisive implementation.
According to the details, CM Maryam revealed that 20 major measures will be introduced across Punjab to modernize the traffic system, strengthen law enforcement, and make road travel safer and more efficient.
Chairing a high-level meeting, the chief minister approved several key decisions, including stricter penalties for traffic violations. Vehicles accumulating multiple fines will be auctioned, while government vehicles will receive no exemptions from penalties.
She directed officials to eliminate one-way violations within 30 days and instructed for the redesigning of U-turns to improve road organization and safety. It was also decided that families of victims of fatal accidents will receive “diyat” (compensation) without delay.
Marriage halls across Punjab will now be required to provide sufficient parking facilities or face closure. A strict crackdown on underage driving was also ordered, with car owners risking up to six months in jail for allowing minors to drive.
Additional measures include a ban on passengers riding on bus roofs, enforcement of mandatory helmet use, and penalties for overspeeding vehicles traveling between cities. CM Maryam stressed uniform enforcement of traffic laws across all cities, including Lahore, warning that “no one will be exempt from fines.”
Issuing a stern warning to the traffic police, she said this is their final opportunity to improve enforcement. If the reforms are not implemented effectively, a new department may be formed to take over traffic management responsibilities.
